The Counselor Education Doctoral Program at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, the Island University, is at the forefront in meeting current needs in counseling and counselor education with its emphasis in school counseling, community counseling, and marriage and family counseling. The mission of the Ph.D. program is to add depth and breadth in the preparation of counselor educators, and community leaders regionally, nationally, and internationally. Graduates will meet the well documented demand for counselor education professors as the program emphasizes research, teaching, and supervision.
Application Process:
The doctoral program in counseling at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi accepts ten students each Fall. Applications are reviewed during the Spring of each year with completed applications (all required documentation) due by April 1. Qualified applicants will participate in a doctoral interview on either April 14 or April 21. Refer to the admission and application web pages of this website to obtain full information.
Doctoral Program Curriculum:
The doctoral program curriculum is accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) and includes the highest standards of quality as reflected by that body. Didactic and clinical training reflect these national standards and provide graduates with experiences in school and community settings. A comprehensive research component, including doctoral mentoring in scholarly areas of inquiry, prepares students for their dissertation and provides opportunities to study major problems of practice.
Doctoral Program Advisory Committees:
To assure the highest quality and maintain the integrity of the doctoral program, extensive use is made of several regional and national advisory committees. The advisory committees, made up of practitioners in the field and distinguished international educators, will provide systematic feedback to the program throughout the program's history.
Graduate Assistantships:
Ten doctoral students are selected each Fall. Graduate assistantships and out-of-state tuition waivers are often available. Graduate assistantships are available for students to work with the department involved in research, teaching, and supervision. Additional assistantships may be available to work in the renowned Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi Early Childhood Development Center, and the University Counseling Center.
