GRADUATE COURSES

(48 semester hours for School Counseling or Community Counseling Emphasis and 60 semester hours for the Marriage and Family Counseling Emphasis)

The Master of Science Degree in Counseling degree is designed to educate students in the practice of counseling. Upon completion of the degree, students will have met Texas Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) educational requirements. Students seeking school counseling certification should consult with the school counselor program coordinator and the certification office on campus regarding current certification requirements. Students who pursue the marriage and family counseling emphasis will meet Texas Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) educational requirements in addition to the academic requirements for LPC. Students are periodically reviewed by faculty concerning their personal and professional development. Students who fail to demonstrate basic knowledge, personal skills, communication skills, interpersonal skills, and/or counseling skills will be asked to seek remediation or could be dismissed from the program.

EXCET ENDORSEMENT

COMPREHENSIVE EXAMINATION

In addition to successful completion of all courses required for graduation, all students who enroll in the degree program in Fall 2001 or later are required to pass a comprehensive written examination taken during their final semester of enrollment.

EXCET ENDORSEMENT

Educators who did not receive their master's degree in Counseling from this program and who wish to be endorsed to take the ExCET examination must have their transcript evaluated by the Coordinator of the School Counseling Emphasis. Coursework will be compared to courses required in this program and the extent of their education and skills will be assessed. If the student's coursework is judged to be deficient in any area including practicum and internship, then the student will be required to take courses to address these deficiencies.
