Steps to Alternative Certification

Alternative Certification Program

alternative certification step 1 Complete your bachelor's degree from an accredited institution with a 2.5 or higher GPA.

alternative certification step 2 TExES (PACT): Take and pass the TExES exam (PACT) in one of the content areas offered through alternative certification.

alternative certification step 3 Apply to grad school: After you receive notification of having passed the TExES PACT exam, submit an application to the College of Graduate Studies. Priority consideration is given to ACE applications submitted by April 15 for summer admission, or by August 1 for fall minimester 1 admission.

alternative certification step 4 Begin observation: Begin your state-required 30 hours of observation in schools in your area and/or level of certification.

alternative certification step 5 Begin your required courses: an online orientation course, a total of six online classes, and an online PPR review & practice test (6 clock hours), provided by Texas A&M Corpus Christi. The first two classes begin in May (Minimester A). See the academic calendar for semester dates.

alternative certification step 6 Take and pass the state's PPR exam (Pedagogy and Professional Responsibilities). The PPR is a requirement by the State of Texas in order to obtain a teaching certificate. The classes you have taken have focused on the skills you will need to both pass the test and become a master teacher.

alternative certification step 6 Field experience: Seek employment as either an intern teacher, which is a paid, yearlong position in charge of your own class, or request a student teaching assignment (an unpaid, single-semester position working with a teacher).

After completing the above steps, you will contact Certification Officer Rose Zuniga to apply for certification with the Texas Education Agency.
