Doctoral Program in Counselor Education

Department of Counseling and Educational Psychology – College of Education

About the doctoral program
The Counselor Education Doctoral Program at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, the Island University, is at the forefront in meeting current needs in counseling and counselor education with its emphasis in school counseling, community counseling, and marriage and family counseling. The mission of the Ph.D. program is to add depth and breadth in the preparation of counselor educators and community leaders regionally, nationally, and internationally. Graduates will meet the well-documented demand for counselor education professors as the program emphasizes research, teaching, and supervision.

Counseling program honored
TAMUCC's Department of Counseling and Educational Psychology was named the best counseling program in the nation in 2007 by the Association of Counselor Educators and Supervisors. The Robert Frank Outstanding Counselor Education Program Award is not presented every year, but only when there is a particularly deserving program.

Curriculum
The doctoral program curriculum is accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) and includes that organization's highest standards of quality. Our didactic and clinical training reflect these national standards and provide graduates with experiences in school and community settings. A comprehensive research component, including doctoral mentoring in scholarly areas of inquiry, prepares students for their dissertation and provides opportunities to study major problems of practice.

Advisory committees
To assure the highest quality and maintain the integrity of the doctoral program, extensive use is made of several regional and national advisory committees. The advisory committees, made up of practitioners in the field and distinguished international educators, will provide systematic feedback to the program throughout the program's history.
