Undergraduate Specialization in Reading

Department of Curriculum and Instruction – College of Education

The reading specialization is intended for those students who want to learn advanced approaches to teaching reading/language arts and to gain in-depth knowledge of programs and materials, including children's and adolescents' literature.

Students choosing the reading delivery system will take a sequence of courses intended to provide advanced expertise in the teaching of reading/language arts in the elementary and early middle-school grades:

  • READ 3320 Principles and Practices of Reading Instruction
  • READ 3351 Diagnosis and Correction of Reading Problems
  • READ 3352 Content Area Reading
  • READ 4380 Children's and Adolescents' Literature
  • READ 4352 Advanced Approaches in Reading/Language Arts
  • READ 4394 Field Experiences in Reading

READ 4352 and 4394 are taught at a local elementary school, where prospective teachers work in a field setting with children and have supervised experience in implementation of instruction focused on reading/language arts.

During the 2008-2009 academic year students can enroll in the program for pursuing EC-4 certification, but beginning in fall semester 2009, the program will change to EC-6.
