Department of Curriculum and Instruction
The Department of Curriculum and Instruction provides three graduate programs: the Master of Science in Curriculum and Instruction, the Master of Science in Reading, and the Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction (emphasis in reading). All programs emphasize important links among theory, research, and practice. Faculty are actively engaged in their profession at all levels—international, national, regional, and local—and offer graduate courses that are well grounded in current scholarship and research. Students in our graduate programs are prepared for leadership roles in their chosen careers.
Participants in the Master of Science in Reading Program have the option of pursuing programs of study designed to prepare them for certification as reading specialists or master reading teachers.
In addition to our graduate programs, the department offers a program for undergraduates who choose to have reading education as their specialization in elementary education. Students in this program learn advanced approaches to teaching reading/language arts and gain in-depth knowledge of literacy programs and reading materials.
The Department of Curriculum and Instruction collaborates with educational agencies and other institutions, serving as a resource and advocate for sound educational practice while providing our students real-world experiences. We support programs including the College of Education Reading Conference, America Reads, and the BEST reading program. Our faculty and students contribute actively to the field of education through publications, presentations, teaching, and service.
