BEST Program

About the program
The BEST program (Basic Educational Skills Teaching Program) is a diagnostic reading clinic sponsored by Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi for children who have reading problems. The BEST Program provides individualized reading instruction based on the diagnosed needs of each student. Instruction focuses on reading skills, but related written and oral communications skills are also stressed. At the conclusion of the program, parents receive a complete written report delineating their child's progress. The program is under the direction of Dr. Jack Cassidy, Professor of Education and former president of the International Reading Association.

When?
Students receive two hours (10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.) of individualized instruction on Saturdays during the spring semester of each year.

Where?
The BEST Program is held at the Early Childhood Development Center (ECDC) on the campus of Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi.

What are parents saying about us?

  • "The BEST Program increased my son's proficiency as a reader; but more importantly, for the first time, he saw himself as a competent reader and truly began to enjoy reading." – Dr. Jana Sanders
  • "Ever since my son has been coming to these sessions (BEST), every Saturday morning, he has truly improved in his reading and comprehension. Since he has been attending these classes he reads every night without me having to tell him to read." – Vivian Valdez-Benavides
